Description: We compiled the known literature on climate and topodiversity indicators and used Random Forest and Linear Regression methods in ArcPro (3.3.1) to determine a final subset of indicators that 1) were important predictors of species richness or represented potential future change; 2) contributed unique information to estimate refugia. Climate and topographic analyses were conducted separately to produce estimated macrorefugia (based on climate) and microrefugia (based on vegetation and topographic characteristics). Each variable was assessed for its relationship to potential refugia (positive or negative) and standardized to create more comparable set of metrics for analysis. Once we obtained a final set of indicators for each taxonomic group and for climate variables, we ran an optimization algorithm to determine the most appropriate set of weights to use so that each indicator contributes equally to a final composite index that represents potential for micro or microrefugia (Paruolo et al., 2013; Becker et al., 2017). This analysis was conducted for hydrologic unit boundaries to the 12-digit (HUC12), delineated at 1:24,000-scale in the conterminous United States (U.S. Geological Survey, 2023, Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) for 2-digit Hydrologic Unit - 13, accessed 3/14/2024 at URL https://www.usgs.gov/national-hydrography/access-national-hydrography-products)We calculated composite indices (CI) for each HUC12 as the sum of all indicators where each indicator’s value was multiplied by its weight. Final composite scores were standardized to fall between 0 and 1 (CIStd). Higher values represent greater potential for refugia. Quantiles (20%) were calculated for visualization. Higher values represent higher quantiles (1= <20th percentile, 2=21-40, 3=41-60, 4=61-80, 5= >81th percentile). Note 999 is NO DATAComposite Index represents the standardized total of individual weighted refugia indicators. Higher values indicate conditions representing climate microrefugia which are more likely to be present, in this specific layer for birds. More information regarding the selection and processing of indicators can be found in associated documentation.Data layers:Am_SCI: Amphibian summed Composite Index score for HUC12 In New Mexico.
